In the Know – May, 2025 Newsletter

Notes for the Month
  • Please remember to go in to D4H and mark your plan to attend or your inability to attend your section training(s) as early as possible. This helps for planning purposes.
  • Check your Task Book status at mitf1.org and let your section coordinator know if you have missing information there.

The Upcoming Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November each year. However, this year, there have already been a couple tropical waves – they have not developed into tropical storms, but meteorologists are watching this early movement closely.
Colorado State University has issued their predictions: 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes.
NOAA released their prediction on 5/22/25: Above normal hurricane activity with 13-21 named storms, 7-10 becoming hurricanes and 3-5 becoming major hurricanes.
These predictions are based on warm sea temperatures although there is some unpredictability regarding whether La Niña or or El Niño will be impacting the hurricane season.
No doubt everyone has seen the articles and reports regarding the uncertainty at FEMA. Many positions remain unfilled and probationary employees have been furloughed. The strategic plan for 2022-2026 has been cancelled, future funding is in question and the current administration’s plan is to move disaster response to local and state resources.
Nothing has been specifically reported regarding the 28 teams and responding to disaster situations. This has created anticipation that state teams, such as MI-TF1, may be called upon for earlier, longer and more robust responses to other states that have been impacted by natural or man-made disasters.
It is important that everyone remain ready to deploy should an EMAC request come in!

Grand Rapids Hosts Water Training

The water section participated in a two-day training on the Grand River in Grand Rapids. The goal for the training was designed to exercise the MRP response.
The Canine Group was invited to participate for a couple hours on the first day and also were able to do some work in the GR Training building after a hearty dinner.

2025 MOBEX
IF YOU ATTENDED PLEASE REFER TO THE EMAIL FROM MIKE EVANS AND FILL OUT THE AFTER ACTION SURVEY!!
The 2025 Mobilization Exercise is in the books with nearly every single member attending! The focus for this exercise was on the mobilization process (and by extension demobilization) and on basic survival skills. Map/Compass skills were practiced in the woods – lessons were learned about the best way to navigate to a point based on the geography/conditions. Fire building, setting up a shelter and signaling and water purification were covered – being warm and as dry as possible as well as avoiding intestinal issues are critical to well-being. And all members were treated to a very practical lesson on medical response in the field. Photos below courtesy of Cris Bean and Dustin Lehto:
